Welcome to The Saint Anthony’s Seminary Archive Online

The SAS Archive Online is a project of the Santa Barbara chapter of the SAS Alumni Association. Its mission is to preserve the entire history of St. Anthony's Seminary. As time and funds permit, we will continue to digitize, upload and preserve historical documents, photos, Antonian magazines and annuals, musical recordings and other items of interest from both our existing resources and private collections donated by former students.

The Louis Martin McMullen Collection

Louis Martin McMullen was born in 1910 and hailed from Phoenix, Arizona. He was a student of Saint Anthony's Seminary and attended for three school years: 1924 / 25, 1925 / 26, and 1926 / 27. His graduating class was 1929 (fifth year); 1930 (sixth year). During his time at the seminary he learned photography from one of the faculty priests (we're researching names) and photograhy became a lifelong passion of his.

Student Signature Items

The SAS Archive has in its posession dozens of hymnals, prayer books, music folders, etc. that were used by students as part of their daily seminary life in prayer and study. A certain number of these items bear the "signed" name of a student, indicating that the item was personally used by him during his time spent at St. Anthony's Seminary.

The Antonian

It's been said that if you want to know the history of St. Anthony's Seminary a good place to start is with The Antonian, the official student magazine published continuously from 1920 until 1987, when the seminary closed. While the complete history is more complex, it's certainly true that The Antonian provides us with a unique view into the past unlike any other. Produced on campus by Serra Press, the seminary's official printer, The Antonian offered students the opportunity to report on what the many aspects of campus life were like at a minor seminary--living, working and worshipping together.

SAS School Records

Every former student of St. Anthony's Seminary can receive photo-copies of any and all materials contained in his official school record files. The information in each student's file will vary accordingly. It may include material such as personal data, report cards, school transcripts, progress reports, vocational questionaires etc. These confidential files are available to former students of Saint Anthony’s Seminary only.

We Need Your Support

The SAS Archive is in danger of becoming a casualty of the economy. The online work of documenting and digitizing has been greatly slowed and hampered by a lack of funding. More than ever The SAS Archive needs your financial support to continue this valuable work.  Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution by donating to the SAS Archive now.

About Us

The SAS Archive was formerly a program of  Instruments of Peace, a non profit created in 2008. The SAS Archive Online (the site you are currently visiting) was, and is, the SAS Archive's web presence.

In 2011, the physical materials from the SAS Archive were removed from the SafeNet office on the grounds of Mission Santa Barbara where they had been temporarily stored since 2006 and donated to Rick Lang (SAS class of 1980) of the SAS Alumni Association (Santa Barbara chapter). The materials are currently in storage until a decision is made as to the future of the SAS Archive.

In January, 2012, ownership and management of the SAS Archive Online was transferred to Rick Lang and the SAS Alumni Association (Santa Barbara chapter), thus completing a year of discernment, change and renewal.
